The Rotten Truth about Disc Rot

August 10th, 2005 · No Comments

I mentioned this before and I felt it was worth discussing again-degradation of CD’s and DVD’s. BE CAREFUL WHEN REMOVING DISCS FROM THEIR HOLDERS!!!!!!!!!!! Why? Because prying out discs from their cases cause microfractures of the plastic which allows humidity to leach in and causes the disc layers to separate. This happens especially to DVD’s and this is why they have retractable hubs to release them when they are activated. It really is not known how long these discs will last. For that reason back up your important pictures on an external hard drive.

1. Store discs in their cases and place them vertically.
2. Label discs in the clear center. Don’t write on the underside or on the painted surface, especially with a ballpoint pen or a solvent based ink.
3. Use Lightscribe Direct Disc labeling technology.
4. Wipe finger prints off from the center to the edge. NEVER IN CIRCULAR MOTIONS. Do not use acetone.
5. Buy premium discs such as Mitsui/MAM-A CD’s.

Be careful. It would be a major crime to lose those precious images.
