Big Changes and Uncertainty

January 28th, 2007 · No Comments

In the last few years and especially the last few months there have been several major acquisitions of digital radiography technology. Gendex and Dexis were purchased by Danaher. Schick was purchased by Sirona and Kodak was purchased by Onex. As an industry observer and information resource for dentists none of these changes concerned me. They did nothing to change my opinion of any of these products.
The reason I didn’t change my opinion is that in each case the brand was continued, the management and support teams were kept in place and the business philosophy behind each product appeared to be staying the same.
Based on the information in the press release it does appear the same thing is happening with the acquisition of the Dentrix image products by Danaher under the Dexis brand. It is impossible to know how these two quite different products will be blended together. It may result in a much better product than either Dentrix or Dexis was offering in the past. However since it is not possible to know what will happen and since my loyalty is to dentistry not to vendors I would be a cautious buyer of these products at this time.

Dentrix Dental Systems – Dexis Announcement

January 27th, 2007 · No Comments

Dentrix Dental Systems – Dexis Announcement [1]
Henry Schein has made a major strategic change and has sold off the high tech division of Dentrix. See the announcement from the Dentrix web site below. The announcement says that the purchase was made by Dexis, LLC. In fact Dexis is owned now by a much bigger company Danaher.
In the last few years Danaher has purchased Gendex, Dexis and now part of Dentrix. (They also acquired several other dental companies including Kavo, Pelton Crane and others).
According to the company line the intent is to fuse the best of each product and to continue to provide the wide range of interoperability that Image pioneered. However it looks like they will blend them into the Dexis brand.

Melville, N.Y. and Des Plaines, IL, January 7, 2007 DEXIS, LLC, and Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq: HSIC), today announced an agreement to transfer certain assets and liabilities relating to the DENTRIX proprietary digital imaging business to DEXIS. The agreement includes the ImageRAYi and Easy Ray sensors, Image CAM HD intra-oral camera, and the DENTRIX Image, Easy Image, DENTRIX Clarity and Vipersoft software applications. The imaging software solutions to be sold in the future will continue to enjoy the same functionality and product interoperability as they do today. All imaging products offered by DEXIS will be exclusively distributed by Henry Schein.

New web search and optimization

January 27th, 2007 · No Comments

Cosmetic Dentist, [1]
One new vendor I saw at Yankee that impressed me was Cosmetic Dentist 411. This is another web site search and optimization service. I liked this one because they seemed to have a better handle on both how the web works and how people shop using the Internet. The other reason I am interested in this now is I believe we have reached the tipping point on web use by the public. I think that a great many highly qualified people looking for good dentistry will now be turning to the web. I did not see that happening five years ago.

Dentrix G2

January 27th, 2007 · No Comments

One of the most obvious features of Dentrix G2 is the new 3D graphic chart. Here is a sample image. These new graphics and the integration with a whole new presenter concept is way cool. But the graphics take a bit to load. Like 10 to 20 seconds. That isn’t really a long time, but it sure seems like it when you are waiting. On the other hand it should be a once a day wait.
I am still learning G2. It is truly a major overhaul that provides so many new options. Do not try to implement it without training.

Desk of the Future Will Charge Electronic Devices

Desk of the Future Will Charge Electronic Devices
By Helen Chernikoff, Reuters NEW YORK (Reuters)—In the office of the future, desk jockeys who cannot live without cell phones, BlackBerrys and iPods will be able to charge up such devices just by putting them on their desks. Office furniture maker Herman Miller Inc. has a license from Fulton Innovation for eCoupled, a system that eliminates the need for dedicated chargers, said Herman Miller spokesman Mark Schurman in a telephone interview. “Hallelujiah!” said Jim Lynch, director of the Association of Professional Office Managers. A desk equipped with eCoupled would save money on adapters, said Lynch, who would recommend it to his 8,000 members. “Those things are 30 bucks each and if you have 50 people in your office the cost really adds up,” Lynch said

Underwhelming medical update.

January 20th, 2007 · No Comments

I kvetched about my lousy medical experience a few weeks ago. It gets worse. Despite the hollow assurances from the MD that they would do a good job (despite all indications to the contrary) he botched it. However he has never had the integrity to speak with me about it. Instead he has a staff person call and try to schedule me again for an even more invasive procedure.
