Sedona on Video

June 29th, 2006 · No Comments

Check out this video [1]. That is Patrick McGibbon from Dentrix coming down the “Thousand Stairs”. This is one of the most famous jeep tour  areas. By the way Patrick was the only person to ride down, the rest of us watched and applauded.

Sedona

June 21st, 2006 · No Comments

I am off to Technology on the Rocks in Sedona. I will be out of touch for a few days. Also there is a wild fire in a canyon close to Sedona and the forest service is closing the forest on Friday, so our mountain biking will be cut short. Oh well, I am still looking forward to a great trip.

Florida Probe; Improve Accuracy

June 19th, 2006 · No Comments

Captain Hook, Peter Pan and Tinkerbell all probe the same patient. Looking at the dipstick (probe) they wonder is that tissue over the black line? How much over? “Maybe it’s a three?” says Tinkerbell. “Or a three and a half?” asks Peter. “No”, says the Captain “it’s a four.” He pushes the hardest.
Different operators, with different skills and different “push” levels can’t help but to come up with different measurements.
The Florida Probe uses a carefully calibrated tip to ensure that everyone pushes with exactly the same pressure, 15gm. The instrument then takes a digital measurement accurate to 0.2 mm. All the periodontal findings including bleeding, attachment loss and probe depths are recorded in a digital chart which becomes part of the patient’s electronic record.
The Florida probe also calls out the findings as they are recorded. So the patient hears the computer saying, “Three, two, three, three, four, danger!”
The result is faster, more accurate and more consistent periodontal charting.

Pick the Right Camera

June 19th, 2006 · No Comments

This is an excerpt from PC Magazine, read the whole article here: Feature from PC Magazine: Pick the Right Camera [1]

First, figure out a budget. About $100 will buy you the most basic digital camera, with 4 megapixels at best and likely no optical zoom (just digital zoom). Cameras from $200 to $450 come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes (from compact to superzoom 35mm lookalikes), although the most popular are 5- or 6MP models with 3X optical zoom. The next price tier—$450 to $600—gets you much more in terms of optical zoom, megapixels, and features. Last but certainly not least, you can get a decent D-SLR (with lens) for about $600, but a pro-level model can cost up to $8,000 (with a variety of lenses).

ViziLite

June 18th, 2006 · No Comments

Another oral cancer diagnostic using a high tech alternative light source. This one is from Zila, see the web site here: Zila Professional Pharmaceuticals – [1]

ViziLite Plus with TBlue630 is an oral lesion identification and marking system that is used as an adjunct to the conventional head and neck examination. It is comprised of a chemiluminescent light source (ViziLite) to improve the identification of lesions and a blue phenothiazine dye (TBlue630) to mark those lesions identified by ViziLite. ViziLitePlus with TBlue630 is designed to be used in a patient population at increased risk for oral cancer. ViziLite Plus with TBlue630 is:Easy, safe, and non-invasive Takes less than 3 minutes to perform
This system is different than the VELscope. ViziLite is not really an instrument but is a single use system. The cost per use is about $25 and they are sold in lots of 40.
There is an insurance code for the procedure but of course very few plans will cover it.

XCPT, Interesting new treatment planning software

June 17th, 2006 · No Comments

See the web site here  XCPT [1]

XCPT software is a highly visual, on-the-spot consultation and treatment planning method that recognizes the physical, as well as psychological aspect of visualization involved in treatment planning and case acceptance. All of the treatment planning is done directly in front of your patient in real time, on his own image, creating a powerful sense of ownership and understanding regarding the dental challenges at hand. This paves the way for open communication between doctor and patient, allowing your patient to make an educated choice when considering your recommendations.
I saw this at the Florida meeting and was more impressed than I expected. I will be trying it out, there is a trial download available on the web.
