Life savers for your digital images- part II

Take care not to over handle your CDs and DVDs. Do not bend or force them out of their jewel cases because they may crack causing breakdown problems in latter years due to oxidation. Make sure your hands are clean and try not to touch the surface of the discs. Avoid writing with a sharp pen or solvent type marker. Use an alcohol or water based pen. Never write on the underside of the CD or DVD. Don’t use adhesive labels (causes the discs to wobble at high speeds) and store your discs vertically. If possible store the discs in low humidity and in cool temps. If you need to remove dirt from the disc wipe with a clean glasses cloth and wipe from the center to the outside. You can use soft water or disilled water to clean. These above steps help preserve the longevity of your discs. The new Epson inkjet printer for labels appears to be an appropriate means to label your discs. There is also a LightScribe laser labeling method.

For cataloging I prefer Extensive Portfolio 7 (www.extensis.com). The company offers a 30 day free trail. To use the program requires some work to learn how to master it. However once you get the hang of it, the work flow is seamless. If you want to know what is on each disc then you can print thumbnails to place in the jewel cases.
