Twin Flash or Ring Flash

July 9th, 2005 · No Comments

There was some discussion on genX about a twin flash versus a ring flash. I am not sure if everyone understands what a twin flash looks like so I took a picture of my set up. The case I am showing is one of the cases I presented to receive my Fellowship in A.C.E. The two points I want to show are how the twin flash can take images intra-orally and how it shows texture on the front teeth. The older style twin flash systems were fixed and too far apart so they would bounce the light off the cheeks instead of into the mouth for intra-oral shots. But this style lets me rotate the flash heads in every direction so I can point them into the mouth so the flash bounces off the mirror. For anterior shots I have the flash heads pointing straight out and for intra-oral they are two clicks in. I keep them in a horizontal position. The second shot is a cropped out view of the retracted anteriors. I did 16 veneers on this case. 8 on the top and 8 on the bottom. Notice how even in this reduced resolution you can still make out the surface texture on the veneers. If I had taken this with a ring flash the surface would still have the same color but look perfectly flat. This is why I like a twin flash.

If you are not sure which one to get or how they differ, we will show you these systems and you will get to take a ton of images with them at the next genX digital photography course. And I promise to make this very simple.
