They can’t take candy from strangers, but a mint from the dentist could save a kid’s teeth! According to a new report in Journal of Clinical Dentistry (March 2008), BasicMints™ with CaviStat® reduced tooth decay in children’s molars by an amazing 65 percent in just one year. Kids chewed the sugar-free mints twice a day. With children’s tooth decay hitting alarming levels, the introduction of CaviStat is timely.

CaviStat contains no fluoride, but rather a substance that, like saliva, neutralizes plaque acids and also contributes to remineralization. An article at MedicalNewsToday.com states, “CaviStat was designed to counter the formation of dental cavities by simultaneously inhibiting the two fundamental processes known for more than a hundred years to be responsible for cavity development, namely, acid generation by bacterial fermentation of appropriate carbohydrate substrates and solubilization of tooth mineral by the acid generated.” In fact, the ingredients in CaviStat can all be found in humans, so it’s a natural product. Makers of CaviStat at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine licensed the product with Ortek Therapeutics, Inc. Research will be submitted with application to the FDA soon.
