Should Patients Stick with Venom for Fast Healing?

November 6th, 2007 · No Comments

A report in the Journal of Periodontology found that in 15 patients who underwent a gingival graft, a new fibrin adhesive derived from snake venom promoted faster tissue repair and recovery over traditional sutures. The adhesive is a combination of buffalo plasma-derived fibrinogen and a thrombin-like enzyme found in snake venom. Because the adhesive is natural, the body may prefer it over artificial sutures.

In an American Academy of Periodontology article, Preston D. Miller, DDS, and AAP president was quoted as stating, “This adhesive may be a less infectious alternative to traditional sutures. This research highlights the array of therapies available for patients; both traditional and natural alternatives. There continues to be a lot of exciting and innovative research in the field of periodontics.”

More study is required before definite conclusions can be made. Read the study abstract here.
