High Tech-High Touch; Core Concept #3

December 16th, 2007 · No Comments

John Naisbitt the author of the famous book Megatrends coined the phrase “High Tech-High Touch”. Naisbitt noted that people really do like High Tech. That is they like the excitement, the change, the novelty, the speed and rapid access to information, they like new and innovative ways of doing things. But they don’t like being turned in to a number or “digitized”. If they perceive that technology is taking over, if the technology is more important than they are, then high tech back lash results.
The challenge, according to Naisbitt, is to provide the high tech innovation people want and businesses need and at the same time to provide the personal high touch relationships people demand.
Dentistry is a perfect example of a High Tech-High Touch profession. Dental patients really do want their dentist to be up to date, using the latest and best methods. They want and even expect their dentist to be state of the art, cutting edge techno perfect. And yet at the same time what most of them want even more is a personal one on one relationship with their dentist. They crave high touch.
The computer knows when all the appointments are scheduled but it doesn’t know not to schedule the current wife, the ex-wife and the girlfriend all at the same time. The computer knows the balance due but it doesn’t know to ask about the when the next grandchild is due.
The point is technology for its own sake has no value. Technology only has value when it solves a human problem, when it enhances the practice. Always start by examining the human system, what are we doing now? Then look at how technology can make it better.

December 5th, 2007 · No Comments

Nice article with three levels for each product type; Don’t Buy, Maybe Buy and Do Buy.

Gift buying is nice, but if you’re a smart shopper, you know that there’s no better time to buy for yourself than during the holidays. There are great new products and amazing deals available to you right now. Of course, it’s just as easy to screw up purchases for yourself as it is to blunder on someone else’s gift. That’s why I’m here to introduce my third annual “What Not to Buy” guide to ensure your holiday-buying success.

Data Base Marketing

December 4th, 2007 · No Comments

Data base marketing is information management in its purest form. Companies use it all the time to target you for products or services they believe you will buy.  For example have you ever noticed that once you buy from a catalog you immediately receive some similar catalogs or direct mail solicitations? That’s because you have exhibited a buying pattern that other companies want to cash in on.
Businesses use database marketing to target you in many ways. For example they can segment the population into groups by age, sex, locale, occupation, prior buying habits and hundreds of other categories. The needs, wants and buying habits of each group are analyzed and they are offered products or services they are likely to buy. This is a good thing. It limits the solicitations you get to things you might actually be interested in and it save businesses money by targeting likely buyers.
Once you have been using a good practice management program for a while you will have accumulated a database on your patients, which you can use in similar ways. Data base marketing combines word processing with data from the management system. To use it well you need to understand the practice data base and the merge functions of Word and e-mail.

Memory Defined

November 26th, 2007 · No Comments

Hard Drive: The hard drive is the main storage memory of the computer. Hard drive storage is measured in Gigabytes or GBs. In computer talk this is called a gig. The higher the GB of the hard drive the more total storage you have.
Random Access Memory: This is abbreviated as RAM. RAM was measured in Megabytes, or MB. New computers are now available with 1000MB which is a gigabyte. RAM is the active memory a computer has to process or manipulate data. The higher the RAM number the more memory is available. More RAM will allow you to do more things on the computer simultaneously and faster. Having too little RAM is a common cause of computer freezes or crashes. If this happens then you use the alternative RAM definition, Rarely Adequate Memory.
The two kinds of memory or storage confuse some people. A useful analogy is to think in terms of books. The hard drive storage is the total data you have available. It is like all the books you have on the shelves. The more shelves you have the more hard drive storage you have. The RAM memory is the book you have taken off the shelf and are currently reading. RAM is like your desk, the bigger the desk the more books you can keep open on it.
