Gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss in the US. However, the heart-health link to periodontal disease has become an even hotter topic , and rightfully so. We now know that gum disease can increase a person’s risk for a long list of overall health conditions, some of which are serious –
- heart attack, stroke,
- diabetes complications,
- low-weight birth,
- dementia and Alzheimer’s disease,
- osteoporosis,
- and respiratory diseases.
“The Gingivitis Diet,” at www.HealthyFellow.com reviews these interesting developments and research on this topic.
- One study showed that of 1200 older men, those who consumed increased caortenoids (a type of antioxidants found in bright fruits and veggies) had reduced proclivity for periodontitis.
Journal of Clinical Periodontology - Another study found that in seniors, dark green veggies, yellow veggies, and dairy products protected teeth and gums. The same study noted alcohol and sugar as factors that contribute to oral health deterioration.
PubMed - In assessing a group of people with “chronic periodontitis and metabolic syndrome” over the course of a year, researchers found that gum inflammation decreased for patients who adopted a prescribed diet for controlling blood sugar and addressing heart and gingival health.
British Journal of Nutrition - Furthermore, many studies show that regular exercise can reduce risk for periodontitis – and inflammation.
- When 50 people drank probiotic milk for two months, they showed an increase in destructive enzymes that reduce inflammation and promote gingival health. Probiotics may also reduce the risk for tooth decay and plaque buildup.
