Over the past few years, we’ve seen ViziLite, then VELscope, hit the market. Dr. Joe Blaes publicized the importance of oral cancer screening and patient education last year through his editor’s articles in Dental Economics . OralCancerFoundation.org tells us some striking statistics that make oral cancer seem like a significant problem. Over 30K people are diagnosed annually, and 7500 die. Even with increased awareness, early detection, and publicity, the mortality and incidence rates for oral cancer have not decreased.
