What’s Going On at Your Dental Lab

February 20th, 2009 · 2 Comments

lab-techThe dental lab industry is feeling the economic pinch just like you are. DentalLabProducts eUpdate this week includes “Exclusive: 2009 State of the Industry” report for labs. In the article, Pam Johnson tells us that the past six months have taken a toll on dental laboratories.

Those seasoned, hardworking lab guys who had planned to retire in the next few years have put their plans on hold. Still, they enjoy their jobs. About a third think profits will drop, and another third think they’ll increase. Mostly, small labs are concerned with lower profits. As with any industry, no one seems to know what the future holds. The survey gives us a picture of what’s going on, though. It tells us that lab employees are working more and getting less right now. However, if we step back and look at the three-year picture, we see that gross income has actually increased quite a bit. Check out this link to review the survey results for yourself.

Working in a rural, but upscale, retirement area has it’s perks, but it isn’t the money. My gross income has significantly declined since 1999. Yes, ten years of decline. As a one man shop I may, at 59 years old, have to pack it up and go get a job or continue to rely on income from teach laboratory classes part time.
