Ups and Downs in Dentistry: Colgate Doing Well, Delta Dental Laying Off, ADA Report to be Published

February 5th, 2009 · No Comments

dental economyMoneycontrol.com reports that Colgate’s net sales for the last quarter of 2008 were up 14%, net profits increased by 29%. Colgate is the leader in over-the -counter oral health products. The recent growth is due, in part, to an upswing in toothpaste and toothbrush sales. Like a responsible contributor to society, Colgate continues to support oral health awareness programs across the globe. While Colgate is doing well in the current economic situation, Delta Dental is showing signs that seem more in tune with the economy. Layoffs. Do dentists need to worry?

The largest US dental insurance company, Delta Dental, recently released 156 employees in a lay off. Seventy of these employees were from the Rancho Cardova operations center, the largest office Delta Dental has in California. When the 156 people laid off is added to 50 open positions, the company has cut about 5% of its workforce. The 50 empty positions will not be filled soon, as a hiring freeze is in effect.

The ADA is publishing a comprehensive report on the state of dentistry in the current economy. Dental Practice & the Economy will be based on the ADA Survey of Economic Confidence of Dentists and should be sent out to members. Currently, a series of news articles by Arlene Furlong will be published online. The first in the series is posted for review now. The purpose is to “…inform and advise dentists on how to help patients maintain good oral health, instill suitable practice management strategies and maybe even find the upside of a downturn.” The article ranks the economy with an “F,” representative of Foreclosures, Food and fuel inflation and deflation, Financial problems, and Fear and unemployment. Challenges, strategies, and early concerns are also noted.
