Magnetism Reduces Swelling

January 9th, 2008 · No Comments

Have you seen those magnetic bracelets for sale at drugstores and pharmacies? Maybe you wear one. Maybe you think they’re hokey. The theory behind the bracelets is "magnet therapy" to reduce aches and pains – and even depression. Until now, magnetic therapy has not had the scientific basis to convince skeptics that it’s a viable therapy, though it has been in use since ancient times. Once again, science has evolved. According to an article at Medical News Today, recent scientific evidence supports that a magnetic field can reduce swelling from an injury.

Microcirculation is the science of how blood flows through tiny blood vessels in the body, and it’s Dr. Thomas Skalak’s area of expertise. His research indicates that a magnetic field can reduce swelling in an injury, immediately after the injury is incurred. With the absence of swelling, an injured patient will "experience less pain and better mobility," according to Dr. Skalak.

The article in Medical News Today says nothing about the application of magnets to reduce swelling for oral surgery patients, but it stands to reason that the possibility exists. The therapy may become commonplace in many areas of medicine. Dr. Skalak says, "We now hope to implement a series of steps, including private investment partners and eventually a major corporate partner, to realize these very widespread applications that will make a positive difference for human health."

His findings are published in American Journal of Physiology. The University of Virginia conducted the study.
