3D Charting for GDs Doing Well in Clinical Trial Stage

August 17th, 2007 · No Comments

Are you ready for 3-D charts? According to a study in August’s The Journal of the American Dental Association, a new 3-D charting model got high marks in a 14-week study. The article states, "No studies have investigated the inclusion of a three-dimensional (3-D) charting interface in a general dental record" (http://jada.ada.org/cgi/content/abstract/138/8/1072)…that is, until now.

The most common chart used today is a 2-D design that’s a century-and-a-half old, but this may soon change. While more research is necessary, the 3-D prototype went over well in user tests. The chart included a 3-D image that allowed multiple viewing angles and close ups of individual teeth, as well as quick access to digital X-rays and a patient history timeline. Select dentists tested the program and found some challenges, but overall gave it the thumbs up.
