How Fast is your Internet Connection?

August 20th, 2006 · No Comments

The following is from PC Magazine
ISP SpeedOptimum Online, available in the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut area, provides the fastest nonfiber connection. In general, the cable providers beat DSL, although AT&T Yahoo! actually surpassed many cable-based ISPs. Verizon’s fiber service blew them all away.

Where did that e-mail “really” come from?

August 20th, 2006 · No Comments

An insidious e-mail fraud is called Phising. You may receive e-mail messages purporting to be from banks and Web sites that are obviously not from those institutions even though the return address looks real. Is there a way to find out where these messages actually came from?
You probably won’t be able to trace the fraudulent message directly back to its human sender. However you can usually poke around inside the message’s  header field to see where it might have come from electronically. Check your particular e-mail program’s settings for displaying “full” or “long” message headers — in Outlook Express, for example, you can see the full header by right-clicking on a message in your mailbox window, selecting Properties and clicking the Details button.
The full header shows the path that message took across the Internet from sender to recipient. Even if the return address is forged,  if you look closely, odds are you’ll see other addresses in the “Received:” lines in the header that give some indication of the message’s origin. A detailed explanation of how to read e-mail headers is at spamlinks.net/track-trace-headers.htm. [1]
Be very suspicious of an e-mail that asks that you go to a web site and enter personal information like account numbers or passwords.

Smart Care via a Mouse, but What Will It Cost? – New York Times

August 20th, 2006 · No Comments

From the – New York Times [1] read the who;e article

THE electronic medical record seems an example of pure progress, a technology that yields only winners. So it has been cast as a geeky hero in health care policy circles.David M. Cutler, a health economist at Harvard, says that having more information could lead to more care and higher spending. Michael O. Leavitt, the secretary of health and human services, recently said the rollout of electronic health records was “the most important thing happening in health care.”
……………………..Yet even the technological optimists expect turmoil from the information revolution they see coming in health care. Electronic patient records woven into a national digital network will help identify cost-saving opportunities, they say, but when combined with the emerging field of genomics, the records will also open the door to personalized medicine, new treatments — and, ultimately, more care. While that is by no means a bad thing, it is also not the hoped-for fix for the nation’s rising health care bill.

What is a Webinar???

August 17th, 2006 · No Comments

Webinar is short for Web-based seminar; that is a presentation, lecture, workshop or seminar that is transmitted over the Web.
A key feature of a Webinar is interactive elements; that is the ability to give, receive and discuss information. This is different that a Webcast, in which the data flow is one way and does not allow interaction between the presenter and the audience.
I am learning more about this technology and believe it will have an impact in dentistry, both for CE and for online consultations.

Alternatives to Backing Up Online

August 17th, 2006 · No Comments

Burn a new CD or DVD every Sunday night and store them at your brother-in-law’s office.
Buy five $200 external hard drives and hope your office doesn’t burn down.
Do nothing and don’t worry about backup. (We suggest closing your eyes, plugging your ears and repeating “I’m in my happy place, I’m in my happy place.”)
Run a cron job of rsync, gzip and mcrypt piped over ssh to your friend’s server over his DSL line.

Web Based Payments

August 17th, 2006 · No Comments

Essentially any paper you are now generating will become an electronic document. For example we are now seeing some businesses eliminating paper statements and sending electronic e-statements. Banks are also offering online payment plans that allow users to make payments with no paper checks. Soon you will send an electronic bill, no paper, no envelope no postage. The patients will then pay with either an online bank program or possibly directly on your practice web site, no paper, no envelope no postage. Just like the e-call system an e-billing system is set up once and then will run automatically whenever you choose. There would be no need to run statements once a month and create a mass mailing. E-statements could be sent on a daily basis, reducing costs and smoothing out cash flow.
Of course it will work the other way as well. You will receive statements from suppliers and others via e-mail and pay electronically.
