Paperless? Yes it is Possible!

September 26th, 2005 · No Comments

I know it is possible because we have been doing it for years and the results are remarkable!
When we consult with a dental office (www.drlarryemmott.com [1]) one of the primary goals they have is to “go paperless”  Pull the chart of a patient you have been seeing for some time and see what is in there. There will be an information sheet  a health history, a tooth chart, a history of written notes which appear to be created in a top secret code. However that’s just the beginning, most dental charts have many more bits of paper that accumulate like pocket lint; lab slips, payment info, prescriptions, correspondence, insurance forms, specialty referrals, consent forms, x-rays, HIPPA forms, re-call information, insurance EOBs, specialist reports, photographs, treatment plans, financial arrangements and more.
We now record and store every one of those bits of information digitally as part of the electronic record. Patient chart and financial information is recorded in Dentrix [2]. Photos are digital and managed with ImageFx [3], X-rays are Kodak [4] digital. Correspondence and reminders are sent via e-mail or text message (www.smilereminder.com [5]). Any paper that comes from the rest of the world, like a specialists report, is scanned, stored in the electronic record and the paper is shredded.

Vipersoft becomes Clarity

September 25th, 2005 · No Comments

Dentrix has changed the name of their stand alone imaging product from Vipersoft to Dentrix Clarity. Vipersoft was the original name of the program when Dentrix purchased Integra Medical. Vipersoft was integrated to Dentrix as Dentrix Image. The product is the same only the name has changed. Clarity is a complete image management application which includes cosmetic imaging, digital video and digital radiography applications. Vipersoft/Clarity also has some of the best interoperability in the industry as it connects with all the major x-ray sensors and scanners.

PC Magazine: Big Threat from Little Devices

September 25th, 2005 · No Comments

Solution from PC Magazine: [1]

By Larry Seltzer The avalanche of network security concerns today make it easy to lose focus on securing physical access to PCs. Don’t. Sensitive data may be walking out your front door. Our sister publication, eWeek, recently reported [2]that vulnerabilities in some Windows USB device drivers could allow someone with physical access to a computer to compromise it. And USB is not the only way; FireWire, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, PC Card, and the like may pose potential threats as well. Regardless of protocol, PCs face a threat from the myriad devices that may be attached to them, legitimately or otherwise, especially since Autoplay, the feature that automatically runs a program from a CD when the disk is inserted in the drive, is also enabled by default for USB and FireWire media. So when you’re not looking, if I insert a USB key in your unlocked computer, I can run a program from the key with whatever rights and privileges you have. The program might steal files, install spyware, send spam using your e-mail account, or do anything for which you have privileges. Sure, there’s a chance your antivirus app will see the program if it’s malware—but suppose it’s not. Suppose the program simply copies files from your computer to the key or from the key to your network, or sends e-mail using your connection, or a million other undesirable things. You might never know of the intrusion

Awesome ROI

September 22nd, 2005 · No Comments

The following example comes from a recent Emmott on Technology [1] in office consultation
    Annual $ Savings

Save 15 hours per day from single entry in the back  $  71,250

Including charting and pulling charts

Save 4 hours per day confirming patients   $  19,000
Save mailing costs on 8,000 re-call cards per year  $    8,000
Save the cost of creating and mailing 4800 statements $    7,200
Re-activate 2 patients a week with reports and contacts $  37,600
Capture 3% of treatment not being billed   $  16,200
Improve case acceptance with images by 10%  $  54,000
Reduce costs by 5%with improved management numbers $  18,900
Attract four new patients a month with technology  $  48,000
Total Savings per year                $236,950
Hourly savings are based on a 190 day work year, and a $19/ hr wage plus 30% administrative costs for a total of $25/hr.
Re-activation savings are based on a 47-week year and $400 of work per patient
Annual percentage savings are based on a monthly gross of $45,000 with 70% overhead.
Plus there will be the added benefits of less stress, motivated team members, faster procedures, more accurate notes, less lab re-makes, lower radiation, better patient communications and you will absolutely get referrals because patients will perceive the office as high tech, up to date, modern and worth more than an “average” office.
